First visiting Kuliang in 1912, Miss Mary Mann wrote home about how beautiful Kuliang was. She said:
“I believe this is the most beautiful spot I have yet seen on this old globe. Our Rocky Mountains are wonderful and almost fill one with awe, but these mountains round about Fuzhou are picturesque. From my window I look down a large, narrow ravine, the sides of which are a scene of rice and sweet potato terraces with pine trees scattered about. Almost all is a mass of shades of green and sure a landscape gardener couldn’t add anything to this beauty.”
